Senator invites public to protest sinkhole rate

Pasco County, Florida -- Senator Mike Fasano and Policyholders of Florida will be lining up along Little Road in front of the Pasco County Government Center (7530 Little Road, New Port Richey 34654)  on August 16 from 4-6 p.m. to wave signs and express their opposition to the proposed sinkhole rate increases sought by Citizens Property Insurance Corporation.  State Senator Mike Fasano invites all consumers to make a sign and come out and join him.
 
“It is time for our governor, chief financial officer, many of my colleagues in the legislature and the decision makers at the Office of Insurance Regulation to get the message that people can’t afford the outrageous premiums Citizens is seeking,” Senator Fasano states.  “Please join me on August 16th and let Tallahassee know that these rates are unacceptable.”

SWAT standoff called off, suspect dead

Pasco County, Florida - SWAT Team members with the Pasco County Sheriff's Office were called out to the area of Trouble Creek and Grand in New Port Richey Saturday afternoon after a man was reported firing shots nearby.

Investigators say gunfire was exchanged between deputies and the suspect.

Sheriff's spokesman Doug Tobin says the suspect was found dead inside a house located at 5702 Columbia.

New Port Richey, Florida -- The Starkey Trail projects that connect Starkey Boulevard and Wilderness Park Road to the trailhead in Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park and the Suncoast Trail are now open to pedestrians and cyclists. 

There is an eight-foot asphalt Multi-Use Path along the east side of Starkey Boulevard from Alico Pass to Wilderness Park Road, an eight-foot concrete Multi-Use Path on the north side of Wilderness Park Road and a ten-foot asphalt Multi-Use Trail that meanders through the Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park to the trailhead and Suncoast Trail.

Waitress rips off customers with credit card skimmer

Port Richey, Florida -- At least nine customers at the Port Richey Mugs N Jugs fell victim to a credit card skimming waitress, according to Pasco County Sheriff's Detectives.

"We do have more victims, we're working on locating them," said Detective John Suess. He's encouraging anyone who went to the restaurant to take a close look at their credit card accounts to see if there are fraudulent charges.

The case is centered on 25-year-old waitress, Kathryn Shana'e Perez.

Tarpon & Pasco team up to ask for minimum wake zone on Anclote River

Tarpon Springs, Florida -- City leaders in Tarpon Springs plan to team with Pasco County to ask the state to set up a "slow speed minimum wake zone" for a section of the Anclote River.

At Tuesday's City Commission meeting, Tarpon City Police detailed an ordinance being worked on for the mouth of the Anclote River--where it meets the Gulf of Mexico.

If approved, the zone would affect the river between Marker 32  in the city limits to the Pasco County line near Marker 19.  Pasco County would extend the zone to 300 yards west of Marker 17.

Two new hospitals to discuss plans with Pasco residents

Pasco County, Florida --The chief executive officers of hospitals under construction in Wesley Chapel and Trinity will discuss their timetables and operational plans at the Aug. 11 meeting of the Pasco Alliance of Community Associations. 

The public is invited to attend the PACA meeting. It begins on Thursday, August 4, at 7 p.m. at the Land O’ Lakes Community Center, located at 5401 Land O’ Lakes Blvd. (US 41), three miles north of SR 54.

Offering their updates and answering questions about their hospital planning will be Brian Adams of the 80-bed Wesley Chapel Medical Center scheduled to open in 2012, and Leigh Massengill of Medical Center of Trinity, expected to open this year with 236 beds.

Elderly man hit and killed in Pasco

Holiday, Florida - The Florida Highway Patrol says a vehicle hit and killed a 77-year-old man crossing U.S. 19 this morning.

It happened near Bartelt Road in Holiday just before 10 a.m.

Investigators say 20-year-old Jaimee Torress of Largo, was driving his 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer north on U.S. 19 when the pedestrian walked into his path. 

The pedestrian was not in the crosswalk when he was hit and he died at the scene.

Troopers are working to notify the dead man's next of kin.
