Pasco County, FL -- A suspected shoplifter is dead after deputies say he shot himself in the head.

Deputies responded to the Kmart located at 12412 U.S. 19 Hudson after receiving a call that 52-year-old David Harris Shafley was stopped by store security for shoplifting. Investigators say he tried to steal batteries and soda worth around $39.

Shafley was taken to a secure room in the back of the store for questioning. While he was in the room, he pulled out a handgun and fired one shot.

After security personnel fled the room, Shafley fired a second round, a self-inflicted wound to the head. He was transported to Bayonet Point Hospital, where he later died. No one else in the store was hurt.

According to deputies, prior to this incident, Shafley told loss prevention he was distraught and was having a hard time caring for his 93-year-old grandmother.

The new locations are part of the health system's integrated network of breast centers offering breast imaging and biopsy services performed by specialized board-certified physicians, nurses and technologists.

You'll find the new Pinellas location, Susan Cheek Needler Breast Center at Mease Countryside Hospital, in the Medical Arts Building located at 1840 Mease Drive in Safety Harbor.

The Pasco location, Susan Cheek Needler Breast Center at Morton Plant Mease Outpatient Center is located at 2102 Trinity Oaks Boulevard in Trinity.

The centers offer digital mammography and advanced diagnostic breast procedures and plan to provide follow-up diagnostic results within 48 hours.

New Port Richey, Florida -- As part of its Directions 2011 initiative, The City of New Port Richey will hold a “Visioning and Goal-Setting” work session on Saturday, June 18, 2011, from 8:00am to approximately 3:00pm at Peace Hall in downtown New Port Richey. The public is invited to attend and observe the process.

Interim Human Resources Director Steven Rosenthal will facilitate setting the City Council’s 20-year vision for New Port Richey, core values, guiding principles, and core purpose. The Council will then consider what initiatives are necessary to make their vision a reality.

“This work session will be different from others our City Council has attended,” stated Director Rosenthal. “ ‘Directions 2011’ is a call to action for New Port Richey’s leadership to set direction for the management team and our City’s future progress.”
