Mike Fasano: Florida's renegade Republican

NEW PORT RICHEY, Florida - He never graduated high school. He doesn't bother to insure his home. He even cheers for the Mets.

State. Sen. Mike Fasano, R-New Port Richey, doesn't do much by the books, but perhaps that's why he's been one of the most popular legislators in the state for nearly two decades.

Fasano, 52, is a lifelong Republican whose office is filled with photos he's taken with Ronald Reagan, Jeb Bush, and George W. Bush.  But few legislators in Tallahassee - from either party - clash with conservative leaders like Fasano.

"I speak out," the 17-year veteran of the legislature said.  "I don't just follow the leader...if you know what I'm trying to say."
