Nominate your favorite teacher in Pollo Tropical campaign

Pollo Tropical is honoring teachers throughout May by giving 15 teachers from 15 counties free Pollo Tropical for a year through its Teacher of the Year campaign.

The winning teachers from each county are the ones with the most nominations from students and parents in their respective county.

For those who nominate a teacher, you will get a free small Pollo Tropical Tropichop with any drink purchase.

All public, private or charter school teachers in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco counties are eligible to be entered.

Stamp Out Hunger - leave food at your mailbox on Saturday

Tampa, Florida --  The U.S. Postal Service and its letter carriers ask Tampa residents to join them and the rest of the nation in combating one of the U.S' growing problems, hunger, by leaving food at your mailboxes on Saturday, May 12. 

According to USPS, this one-day food drive is the nation’s largest single-day food drive across America — including Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands.

Donors can get free steak dinner from Outback Steakhouse

St. Petersburg, Florida -- In an effort to save lives in the Tampa Bay community, Outback Steakhouse is partnering with Florida Blood Services for Operation Donate Blood. 

Anyone who donates blood or platelets twice between May 1 and Aug. 31, 2012 will get a voucher for a free steak dinner at Outback Steakhouse. In addition to the free steak, each donor will also be entered into a drawing to win "Outback for a Year" and a suite package from the Tampa Bay Rays.

New Port Richey, Florida -- The Little Sunshine Preschool and Learning Center of New Port Richey recently presented a $1,200 check to the Foundation for Early Learning in Pasco and Hernando Counties, Inc.

Funds were raised during the school's first Spring Festival Charity Event on April 7. Fifty businesses sponsored the event where families enjoyed photos with Easter Bunny, an egg hunt, crafts, games and raffles.

New Port Richey, Florida -- It was a packed house Sunday night at Rudy's Sports Bar in Largo as the family of Brandon Baker paid tribute to their fallen son.

Baker was killed March 6 in Palm Harbor after a controntation with another driver, Seth Browning, in the early morning hours.

Call to arms to help Pasco children

Pasco County, Florida -- The county is asking for residents to help local children in need by becoming a Guardian ad Litem volunteer.

GAL volunteers are court appointed special advocates for abused, abandoned or neglected children. Volunteers work with the family and/or caregiver for the child's benefit. Each GAL is trained and supported by a professional team, including a volunteer supervisor and a program attorney, and makes recommendations to the court to ensure that the child is placed in a safe, caring, stable and permanent home.

Sheriff's Office team named "Crossing Guards of the Year"

New Port Richey, Florida- A team of school crossing guards assigned to New Port Richey's Schrader Elementary School has been named the Florida Department of Transportation's School Crossing Guards of the Year.

Robert Johnson and Antonio Alves have worked at Little Roach and Star Trail each school day protecting kids from dangerous traffic for the past eight years.

In 2008, Johnson suffered an injured left knee when he was hit by a car trying to protect a group of children getting ready to cross.
