New Port Richey, Florida- A team of school crossing guards assigned to New Port Richey's Schrader Elementary School has been named the Florida Department of Transportation's School Crossing Guards of the Year.
Robert Johnson and Antonio Alves have worked at Little Roach and Star Trail each school day protecting kids from dangerous traffic for the past eight years.
In 2008, Johnson suffered an injured left knee when he was hit by a car trying to protect a group of children getting ready to cross.
Johnson and Alves were nominated by the Pasco County Health Department and recognized at the April 17 school board meeting.
"The entire Pasco Sheriff's Office is extremely proud of our crossing guards Robert Johnson and Antonio Alves," said Sheriff Chris Nocco.
"Along with these two members, we thank all our crossing guards for protecting our youth as they travel to and from school and for keeping a vigilant presence for other threats to our children."
