Port Richey, Florida -- A man found walking less than a mile from a murder scene covered in blood early Saturday morning has been arrested for killing a 35-year-old woman.
Police were called to the home in the 9200 block of Wolcott Lane in The Lakes subdivision after the son of the victim, identified as Kelly Bennett, came home to find her dead from blunt force trauma on the living room floor around 1 a.m.
During their investigation, deputies became aware that a 911 call was made at 12:57 a.m. saying a man was seen walking around less than a mile away from the home in the area of Galen Wilson Boulevard and Bahama Avenue covered in blood. The report says the caller told the operator he was rambling about having just killed someone.
Police found the man, identified as 40-year-old Steven Clairmont, in the area a short time later. In an interview with detectives, they say Clairmont admitted to killing Bennett who he had been living with for the past three weeks while working as a handyman.
Detectives recovered Bennett's iPhone and a prescription pill bottle that belonged to Bennett's son on Clairmont during his arrest. While reviewing the phone, police saw Bennett had sent a text message to her son at 11:22 p.m. "asking when he was coming home because she was having words with Steve and he is not happy," according to the arrest report.
Clairmont has been charged with the first degree murder of Kelly Bennett.
