Outdoor travel writers to explore Nature Coast

The Citrus, Hernando and Pasco County Offices of Tourism Development are promoting the Nature Coast the old fashioned way, by word-of-mouth.

A week-long trip from May 19-26, called the “Nature Coast” FAM Tour, is designed for outdoor/travel writers to experience some of Florida’s best attractions.

The six journalists, who have been published in many notable publications including Alaska Airlines, Southern Living, and Gonomad.com among others, will travel from as far away as California, Oregon and Massachusetts.

Lights out to protect sea turtles

Lights out to protect sea turtles

Clearwater, Florida -- Sea turtle nesting season begins May 1 and ends Oct. 31.

Because newly-hatched turtles find their way to the sea by following the natural light reflected by the water, city ordinances determine specific lighting requirements for beach parking lots, streets, and promenades.

If you live near the beach, make sure you shut off or dim your lights at night.

This precaution can reduce the amount of artificial light that reaches turtle nests and will help hatchlings reach the water safely.

Pasco County, Florida (via Pasco County Tourism Blog) -- “Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!” We are not in Oz, but in Dade City on Pasco County’s east side. The yellow brick road leads to Dade City’s Wild Things Zoo. It’s a path winding under a magnificent tree canopy and though a spacious garden on the Stearns’ property. A two mile trolley ride from the gift shop on Meridian Avenue begins your adventure.

Kathy Stearns is your host and she has developed an ecotour that allows hands-on encounters with many of the zoo’s 170 residents. That path winds past various types of monkeys, black bears, tiger and lions.

Fish and Wildlife Commission announces blue crab trap area closure

Fish and Wildlife Commission announces blue crab trap area closure

The harvest of blue crabs from traps will not be allowed from July 10 through July 19 in the waters of Broward through Pasco counties. This closure will give authorized groups the opportunity to identify and retrieve lost and abandoned blue crab traps from the coastal and inland waters in this area.

All commercial and recreational blue crab traps within three nautical miles of shore and in the inland waters of Broward County, south to and around the tip of Florida and north up the Gulf coast through Pasco County must be removed during the 10-day closed period.

The harvest of blue crabs by other gear, such as dip nets and fold-up traps, will still be permitted during the 10-day closure. The closure also applies to recreational harvesters who use standard blue crab traps, unless the traps are attached to private property.

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (AP) -- Federal agriculture officials will distribute oral rabies vaccine baits around Pasco and Pinellas counties this month in hopes of trying to control rabies in raccoons.
